Dr Yang Hengjun
14 October 2020
Labor is deeply disappointed and concerned that Chinese authorities have decided to prosecute Australian citizen Dr Yang Hengjun on charges of espionage. We join with the Government to call on the Chinese authorities to explain these charges.
Since Dr Yang's detention last year, Labor has consistently expressed concern over Dr Yang's treatment and the lack of transparency and procedural fairness afforded to him.
We strongly support the Australian Government's advocacy for Dr Yang, including through consular assistance. Labor also expects Dr Yang’s case to be resolved fairly and transparently, and in accordance with China’s international legal obligations.
Labor notes the recent comments made by former Chinese Ambassador to Australia, Madam Fu Ying, on the need for both China and Australia to build mutual understanding and trust in our relationship.
We share these objectives and believe it is in both countries' interests to have a productive relationship. The treatment of Dr Yang is detrimental to these objectives.
Our thoughts are with Dr Yang and his family at this time.
