Foreign Minister visit to the Philippines

17 March 2017

Labor is deeply concerned at the loss of life and human rights abuse reported in the Philippines.
In the eight and half months since the inauguration of President Rodrigo Duterte more than 7,000 people have been killed in the so-called war on drugs.
Disturbing reports and allegations have emerged of human rights abuses and corruption, with drugs often used to justify the murder of innocent people.
Prior to her visit to the Philippines the Foreign Minister publicly expressed her concerns about reported human rights abuses in the Philippines.
I urge her to use her meeting with President Duterte to seek an end to extrajudicial killings and ensure those accused of crimes are dealt with fairly by the criminal justice system.
