Hockey Must Detail Opposition Plan for the Economy Today

07 March 2012

Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey will shortly address the Sydney Business Chamber, in a speech that he himself has touted as a Coalition policy spine-stiffener.
I look forward to Mr Hockey finally detailing the Coalitions plans for the nation.
Mr Hockey has to answer some key questions today:
  • Will he return the budget to surplus in the first year of a Coalition government, if elected?
  • What cuts to services will the Coalition make to fill their $70 billion budget black hole?
  • Will he rule out reversing the tax cuts and pension increases Labor will deliver this year?
  • Does he agree with Shadow Finance Minister Andrew Robb that the only way to fund Tony Abbotts Rolls Royce paid parental leave plan is by whacking a new tax on business?
  • Will he rule out a return to WorkChoices, in practice, not just in name?
  • Will the Coalition commit to keeping the Gillard Governments low income superannuation contribution a measure that will deliver a tax rebate of up to $500 a year for low-income earners? And how will they fund this?
The Gillard Government has laid out its vision for the country.
We will use the proceeds of the mining boom to spread the benefits across the economy. Instead, the Opposition wants to line the pockets of wealthy miners.
We have fully costed and laid out in our budget papers how we will fund our policies. The Opposition has not.
We have set out our plan to return the budget to surplus in 2012-13 and we will. The Opposition wont commit to when, or even if, they will deliver a surplus.
Its time for the Opposition to stop being economically reckless and to deliver more than just slogans.
