Israeli Settlements Bill

08 February 2017

Labor opposes the contentious bill retroactively legalising settlements built unlawfully on private Palestinian land in the West Bank, which was passed in Israels Knesset late on Monday. This legislation is a counter-productive step away from progressing a two-state solution. Israels own Attorney-General, Avichai Mandelblit has called the bill unconstitutional. Labor supports an enduring and just two-state solution to the IsraeliPalestinian conflict, based on the right of Israel to live in peace within secure borders internationally recognised and agreed by the parties, and reflecting the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people to live in peace and security within their own state. Labor has consistently expressed the view that settlements in the occupied territories that may undermine a two-state solution represent a roadblock to peace. Labor calls on both the Israelis and the Palestinians to progress negotiations towards a two state solution and not undertake any activities that would hinder the peace process.
