A Shorten Labor Government will back Brisbane community and arts organisations so they can continue to support local communities.
Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Senator Penny Wong, today joined Labor candidate for Brisbane, Pat ONeill to meet with a local mental health organisation, Spur, and to announce how a Shorten Labor Government will support arts and community organisations in inner Brisbane.
Spur projects focus on prevention, recognising that government funding has focused heavily on intervention. Given that 80 per cent of suicides in this country are men, it is clear that resources and funding are not reaching this demographic adequately.
Community projects such as Spur are just some great examples of the initiatives born out of Brisbane, said Mr ONeill.
A Shorten Labor Government will provide $500,000 for Spur projects, which will ensure they can continue their important work in the Brisbane community on suicide-prevention, said Senator Wong.
Senator Wong and Mr ONeil also announced a $800,000 package for co-working space support for community groups and arts organisations in Fortitude Valley.

The creative and social sectors are critical for the life of our city and they need better support to continue their work.
