Manchester Arena explosion

23 May 2017

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the families and friends of the victims attending the Ariana Grande performance at the Manchester Arena. Suffering on this scale is something we all share. Links of kinship and friendship between Australia and Britain are deep and enduring, and so is our grief when events like this happen.
While the British authorities continue to investigate this incident, we note it is being treated as a terrorist incident until otherwise known. Without hesitation or reservation, we utterly condemn this attack.
The death and injury of so many young people is especially tragic. As the home of our shared Westminster form of democracy, Britain has a special place in our hearts and our politics. We feel the pain and sorrow of everyone in Manchester, and in the broader British community.
Labor stands with the British community in their time of need and sorrow.
We note at this time that no Australians have been confirmed as injured from this incident. Anyone concerned about family or friends in Manchester should call the DFAT 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre in Canberra on 1300 555 135 or, from overseas +61 2 6261 3305.
