Military Jobs Under Threat from Tony Abbott

25 March 2013

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has once again made clear he would sack serving military personnel and Federal Police in order to fund his $70 billion budget black hole.
On Channel Ten yesterday, Mr Abbott all but committed to slashing 20,000 jobs out of the public service:
"Well, we are talking about cutting the public service, Andrew. We will trim the public service by at least 12,000 because we don't need the extra 20,000 Commonwealth public sector employees on top of those that we had back in 2007."

(ABBOTT BOLT REPORT 24 MARCH 2013)

This is a slap in the face to the hard working public service and a guarantee that Mr Abbott would follow the irresponsible slash and burn approach of Campbell Newman and Barry OFarrell.
As the Minister for Public Service and Integrity has regularly pointed out, it is incorrect to say the Australian Public Service has grown by 20,000 jobs since 2007.
The only way that Mr Abbott can claim that the public sector has grown by 20,000 jobs is to include government employees working outside the public service - soldiers, reservists, the Australian Federal Police and ASIO employees.
The budget papers show more than half the increase comes from jobs in these areas.
Mr Abbott has one simple question to answer today.
Is he saying nearly 10,000 military personnel and reservists, 1600 AFP employees and over 600 ASIO employees wouldnt have a job under an Abbott Government?
We have seen conservative premiers in states like Queensland indiscriminately cutting public service jobs, and its clear Tony Abbott and the Liberals would take the same approach.
In stark contrast, Federal Labor has methodically identified more than $13 billion in public sector savings since coming to office - without targeting jobs.
