One Year of the Abbott Government: Broken Promises and Unprincipled Deals

07 September 2014

Tony Abbott promised Australians he would not do deals with minor parties and would lead a Government of no surprises.
There will not be deals done with independents and minor parties under any political movement that I lead.''
TONY ABBOTT PRESS CONFERENCE, CANBERRA 4 AUGUST 2013
"We will be a no surprises, no excuses government, because you are sick of nasty surprises and lame excuses from people that you have trusted with your future."

Yet last week Mr Abbott did a backroom deal with minor parties to freeze superannuation guarantee contributions for seven years.
This deal will reduce the retirement incomes of more than eight million Australians.
It will have come as a nasty surprise to these workers because it broke Mr Abbotts election promise of no adverse changes to superannuation.
And it followed a deal between Mr Abbott and minor parties earlier this year to water down consumer protections against dodgy financial advice.
These are just the latest attacks by the Abbott Government on low and middle income Australians.
I want to give people this absolute assurance, no cuts to education, no cuts to health, no changes to pensions and no changes to the GST.
TONY ABBOTT INSIDERS, ABC 1 SEPTEMBER 2013
Despite Mr Abbotts absolute assurance before the election, the Governments Budget slashes $80 billion from schools and hospitals and cuts indexation of pensions.
Tony Abbotts pre-election assurances that there will be no changes to the GST are also now in doubt after his Defence Minister Senator Johnston this week backed a push to reduce GST payments to Tasmania.
In his first year in Government, Tony Abbott has demonstrated that he cant be trusted to keep his word.
