Opposition Refuses to Sign Up to Surplus

03 May 2012

Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey today made it clear the Opposition is not serious about returning the budget to surplus.
This shows the Opposition has no economic credibility.
Australias economy is returning to around trend growth. A budget surplus will put us in a good position given ongoing global uncertainty. A surplus will also continue to give the Reserve Bank the flexibility to move on interest rates should it see fit, as it has done this week.
Mr Hockeys comments today prove that the Opposition is all about wrecking the surplus.
Five days out from the Budget, the Opposition is already spoiling to say no.
All we hear is negativity and slogans from the Opposition who constantly cook up uncosted, undeliverable and unfunded policies.
You only have to look back to the Oppositions shocking record of economic recklessness:
  • They have a $70 billion black hole which theyve yet to explain what cuts theyll make to fill it;
  • They produced dodgy costings at the last election (a $10.6 billion black hole) and the firm tasked with doing their costings was fined for professional misconduct
  • Theyve committed to the prospect of personal income tax cuts with no explanation for how theyd fund them
  • Theyve promise a Rolls Royce paid parental leave plan without outlining how theyd pay for it - despite the fact that there is already a scheme in place which has so for benefitted over 150,000 Australians; and,
  • Their latest costings attempt was carried out by a catering company.
Australians deserve better than an Opposition headed up by a surplus wrecker.
Tony Abbott and the Opposition have one test for next week: stop the negativity and support a budget surplus.
