Labor strongly condemns the reckless and unprofessional act by a Chinese PLA-Navy vessel targeting an Australian defence aircraft with a military grade laser, potentially endangering the lives of those on board.

We are seeking a detailed briefing from the defence department.

These are not the actions of a responsible power.

It is consistent with Beijing’s growing regional aggression.

We expect the Morrison Government to convey Australia’s strong condemnation to authorities in Beijing.

China must understand that such actions will only engender further mistrust.

Support for our defence force is bipartisan and unwavering.

On issues of national security, the focus should remain solely on Australia’s national interest and not political interests.
