Robb Confirms $70 Billion Budget Black Hole

16 August 2011

Opposition finance spokesman Andrew Robb has today confirmed the Opposition has a $70 billion black hole in its budget figures.
When asked about the $70 billion figure on ABC NewsRadio this morning, Mr Robb said:
The $70 billion is an estimate of the sort of challenge that we will have.
Cutting $70 billion is equivalent to stopping Medicare payments for four years, stopping Family Tax Benefit payments for three years or cutting the age pension for two years.
It is absurd to believe that the Opposition could find savings of this magnitude, given they couldnt even compile a $2 billion flood savings package in February without double counting and infighting amongst themselves.
This is also the economic team that delivered a $10.6 billion black hole at the last election, and that has continued to block Government savings measures in the Parliament.
Mr Abbott, Mr Robb and Mr Hockey would need to find savings of $70 billion just to try to reach a neutral position and to fund their commitments to date.
This means they would need to find a whole new round of savings to fund any further commitments into the future.
This is implausible from an Opposition that has shown no interest in economics and no fiscal responsibility to-date.
All this Opposition is focused on is talking down the economy and blowing enormous holes in the budget.
The Abbott team are a risk to the budget, to our international reputation and ultimately to our economy.
