SENATOR THE HON PENNY WONG
LEADER OF THE GOVERNMENT IN THE SENATE
MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS
I pay tribute to the commitment and courage of Senator Louise Pratt following her announcement that she will not seek re-election as Senator for Western Australia.
First elected to the Parliament of Western Australia in 2001, before serving in the Senate from 2008 to 2014 and again since 2016, Louise has always been a determined advocate with deep connections in the communities she represents.
This work began before she even entered parliament, and then as part of the Western Australian Government, she fought to completely remove discrimination against same-sex couples and their children in all WA laws.
Those who were part of the push for marriage equality within the Australian Labor Party and the Parliament know what an early and relentless campaigner Louise was. When we secured victory in 2017, I was glad to have Louise by my side.
She continues to be a proud voice for equality, particularly for trans and gender diverse people.
As a Western Australian Senator, Louise has travelled across vast distances of her state to connect with Aboriginal communities and support their rights.
Louise served in a number of roles on the shadow frontbench as a shadow assistant minister. In portfolios including manufacturing, employment and skills, she worked to ensure a strong future for Australian manufacturing and our manufacturing workers.
In addition to her policy contribution, Louise has also brought a welcome sense of irreverence and fun to the Senate, something that will be missed by many colleagues and staff.
I know Louise has goals to achieve before she leaves the Senate and I look forward to continuing to work with her to advance these during the remainder of her term.
