Senior Liberals Join Robb in Walking Away from Surplus

07 February 2012

The confusion in the Liberal Party on economic policy has hit new heights this morning with Joe Hockey, Christopher Pyne and Julie Bishop all joining Andrew Robb in pushing a surplus into the never-never.
Last night, Mr Robb walked away from delivering a surplus in the first term of a Coalition Government, saying well, it just depends.
And this morning Mr Hockey joined Andrew Robb in dumping the Coalitions commitment to a surplus:
HOCKEY: We will do it as soon as possible. Youve got to be measured on this.

Similarly, Manager of Opposition Business Christopher Pyne said this morning:
HOST: Well hes reiterated that again today, despite the softness in the global economy, thats something the Coalition hasnt been willing to do.
PYNE: The Governments numbers change every six months, Kieran. MYEFO changed last year, well see how the numbers change in this years budget. The numbers change every six months at least from this Government. Theyre utterly unreliable and all that Andrew Robb has said is that when we get into power, and hopefully we will, and we can see what the books are, then we can be in a better position to say when our first surplus will be delivered.

And Deputy Opposition Leader Julie Bishop joined in the circus saying:
HOST: Well Labors going to deliver one this year?
BISHOP: Well before the Coalition is called to account for surplus, the Government has to deliver a surplus. And we know theres a smoke and mirrors exercise under way. But lets see what the real figures are in this years budget and next years budget.

It is hardly surprising that senior Liberals are abandoning a commitment to a surplus en masse, given the $70 billion budget black hole the Opposition will have to cut services to fund.
The Liberals economic trio of Tony Abbott, Andrew Robb and Joe Hockey are in disarray unable to clearly explain to the Australian people how they will manage the national economy.
Australians should be very concerned about the economic circus that sits on the Coalition front bench.
