Australian and other international observers found that the elections, which saw a very high turnout, were peaceful and well-run.
The elections confirm the strength of Timor-Lestes young democracy, having only first held democratic elections in 2001.
They highlight the success of Australias development assistance in Timor-Leste, which includes programs designed to strengthen governance and institutions, and promote free and fair elections.
