Tony Eats Humble NBN Pie

09 April 2013

Tony Abbott has released the Coalitions broadband plan, but, as weve come to expect, its a document big on slogans and light on detail.
The document contains scant information about the costs of their proposal.
This is in stark contrast the Governments approach.
We have produced detailed financial information in two NBN Co Corporate Plans, demonstrating the robustness of the NBN Co business model.
These reports have been independently verified by independent experts KPMG and GreenhillCaliburn.
And we have provided regular reports on the rollout of the NBN, including detailed financial information, to a Joint Parliamentary Committee.
Unsurprisingly, the Coalitions document continues to push misleading figures about the Governments NBN.
In fact, the capital cost of the NBN is $37.4 billion, as set out in the 2012-15 CorporatePlan, and there has been no change to the completion date, which will be by 2021.
However, the Government does welcome Tony Abbotts long-overdue embrace of established international accounting standards and the budget treatment of the NBN today.
Tony Abbott and Malcolm Turnbull have eaten humble pie, finally admitting that their attacks on the Governments accounting treatment of the NBN are false and that the budget treatment is correct.
Mr Abbott should apologise to Australians for repeatedly trying to mislead them.
But we wont be holding our breath.
