UN Secretary-General's Disarmament Agenda

25 May 2018

Labor welcomes the United Nations Secretary-Generals disarmament agenda, launched this morning in Geneva.
Mr Guterres agenda, Securing our common future, proposes many concrete and practical actions to reinvigorate dialogue and negotiations on international disarmament.
The agenda comes at a time when governments and civil society around the world are frustrated with the lack of progress being made, particularly in respect to nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.
Mr Guterres has indicated he will redouble his efforts to re-energise nuclear disarmament by:
  • Resuming dialogue and negotiations for nuclear arms control and disarmament;
  • Extending the norms against nuclear weapons and their proliferation; and
  • Preparing for a world free of nuclear weapons.
The Labor Party aspires to a world free of nuclear weapons and has a long and proud history of advancing nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. This includes the Canberra Commission in 1995 and the establishment of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament by the Rudd Government.
A future Labor Government is committed to building on this legacy through practical and concrete measures that support our national interest and contribute to a safer world.
The thoughtful and sensible agenda launched this morning gives hope of a renewed focus on disarmament, including progressing nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.
We call on the Turnbull Government to embrace the disarmament agenda as an opportunity to build international momentum towards a safer world.
