Women's Sport Set to Benefit in Hobart Under a Shorten Labor Government

26 March 2019

A Shorten Labor Government will invest $3.35 million in major upgrades to the Tasmanian Cricket Association Ground (TCA) in Hobart that will promote womens sport.
The historic ground is the home to several Hobart community groups but currently does not have female facilities.
Labors investment will deliver additional change rooms so top level female teams across several sporting codes can play at the ground.
If elected a Federal Labor Government would inject more than $3 million to deliver:
  • Changerooms that will meet AFL and cricket requirements and enable female teams to have dedicated changing facilities
  • A new and separate umpires changeroom and timekeepers box
  • A social space that will be available to community groups and for larger functions
  • Additional seating, meeting facilities and storage space
We want to see this ground retain its charm that is so crucial to Hobarts character but it is important that we deliver funding that sees the masterplan for the TCA become reality.
Labor understands how targeted funding like this investment can make a big difference to communities and the residents that rely on these facilities for sport and other recreational pursuits.
The TCA has been a fixture of Hobarts sporting history for more than 100 years and its time that we deliver funds that will bring it into the 21st century, Senator Wong said.
Womens competitions in both cricket and AFL are rapidly gaining popularity around the nation. We want to help deliver a sporting ground in Hobart that can properly cater for all teams.
Investments like this one are crucial in order to upgrade popular sports grounds and to facilitate all the social benefits that come with that, but also create jobs and support the local economy, Shadow Minister for Sport, Senator Farrell said.
This project is expected to support 40 local jobs and deliver significantly improved sports ground facilities and thats a win-win for the Tasmanian economy.
So many community groups, not just sporting teams, rely on this ground as the home of their club or association or a place to show off their talents to larger audiences.
Labor Candidate for Clark, Ben McGregor said this project is a true demonstration of how different levels of government can work together to deliver in the best interests of the people of Hobart.
The TCA is not only the home of several great local sporting teams, but is also the home of the Hobart City Band and where major musical acts and sporting teams come to perform to Tasmanian audiences, Ben McGregor said.
I am very proud to have worked with the Hobart City Council, the North Hobart Cricket Club and the Hobart City Band to deliver this commitment from Labor.
